6 Common Mistakes that People Make Whilst Maintaining Good Posture for their Back

6 common mistakes that people often do to maintain posture

It can be irritating at the beginning for any person to correct their posture because their body is so used to sitting or standing in a particular way. However, people who usually have to work with screens often tend to make certain mistakes that can lead them to suffer severe muscle or joint pain. In such cases, courses like DSE training, or a DSE assessment, provide the basic knowledge on how to take precautions whilst working with any devices with a display screen. The training also helps people to understand what is an ergonomic workstation assessment, or what are DSE assessments, and why it is so critical.

So, instead of looking for ways to improve the posture let’s have a look at six common mistakes that people often make that can cause poor posture to the body.

Flatback Standing

Flatback usually occurs due to muscle imbalance, which can then lead to such a position. People who often spend much of their time sitting down for long periods may develop flat back. Try exercising and strengthening your core, neck, rear shoulder and back extensions.

Hunched Whilst Working

It is common among people to hunch over a computer or mobile device, but this can then cause poor posture. The other term for hunching is (text neck) which describes people who bend their head whilst using their mobiles.

Bottom Stick out

People whose bottom is sticking out or have a curve in their lower back, is often due to hyperlordosis. This can happen as a result of wearing high heels over long periods of time, excessive weight around the stomach or pregnancy which can all cause a ‘Donald Duck Posture’.

Chair slouching

Slouching whilst sitting on the chair can cause increased tension to the muscles, which then may turn into pain. It does not cause any discomfort at the beginning, but over time this position may develop strain on sensitized muscles and soft tissues.

Leaning on only one leg

Leaning on one leg is relaxing, but people are not aware of how much excessive pressure this can put on their lower back and hip. Over time, this could result in muscle imbalance near the pelvis area, which then can cause muscular strain in the lower back.

Phone cradling

Supporting the phone handset between the ear and shoulder increases the risk of muscle strain in the neck. It creates pressure over soft tissues and leads to muscle imbalance in the neck.
